Visit Shakespeare’s Birthplace to walk in Shakespeare’s footsteps and explore the house where he was born and grew up.
The playwright spent his formative years in this residence on Henley Street alongside his parents, John and Mary Shakespeare, and his siblings. William was their third child.
His father achieved prominence in Stratford, serving as Mayor in 1568—a status that afforded young William access to the local grammar school. The family occupied one of the town’s largest homes. Following his marriage to Anne Hathaway, Shakespeare and his wife spent the first five years together at this property.
After his death, he bequeathed the house to his eldest daughter Susanna. The property eventually passed through descendants of his sister Joan Hart until the late 18th century, when the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust acquired it in 1847 and has maintained it ever since.
