Stoneleigh Abbey

Visit this stunning Grade 1 listed English Mansion House and explore its beautiful grounds.

Stoneleigh Abbey

Stoneleigh Abbey was established on land granted by King Henry II, beginning as a Cistercian monastery in 1154 before being converted into a residential estate following the Dissolution.

The venue has hosted notable historical figures including King Charles I, Queen Victoria, and author Jane Austen. The mansion comprises two distinct architectural sections. The first features red sandstone construction exemplifying Jacobean design, built beginning in 1561 from monastery remains. The second half, the West Wing completed around 1720, was designed by renowned architect Francis Smith of Warwick in the Baroque style.

The grounds were landscaped by Humphry Repton, a celebrated 18th-century landscape gardener. Invited in 1809 by Reverend Thomas Leigh, Repton created one of his signature ‘Red Books’ featuring watercolour illustrations and proposed alterations. The result showcases natural landscape design with scenic vistas, including the newly restored Cordelia Leigh Bridge and gazebo island walks.
